What does varicose vein treatment cost in the UK?
Published UK prices depend on the procedure and on whether one leg or both are treated. Read on 15 August 2026, Practice Plus Group publishes laser treatment at £1,795 for one leg and foam sclerotherapy at £1,349, while Benenden Hospital publishes laser from £3,467 a leg and Spire Manchester publishes radiofrequency ablation from £4,252. The NHS treats symptomatic veins free, but says treatment purely to improve appearance is not usually available on the NHS.

Each figure is reproduced from the named provider's own published price page as read on 15 August 2026, with the procedure and the number of legs it applies to. Nothing is averaged: radiofrequency ablation, laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy are different procedures at different published prices, and the same procedure is published at very different levels by different providers. - Benenden Hospital publishes endovenous laser treatment from £3,467 for one leg and from £4,854 for both, and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy from £1,618 for one leg and from £1,908 for both (read 15 August 2026).
- Spire Manchester Hospital publishes varicose vein treatment for one leg from £4,252, or from £4,492 as a total package including the initial consultation (read 15 August 2026).
- The NHS states that treatment to improve how varicose veins look is not usually available on the NHS if they are not causing any other problems, and that you may be able to pay for it privately.
- NICE guideline CG168 says that for confirmed varicose veins with truncal reflux, endothermal ablation should be offered first, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy if that is unsuitable, and surgery if foam sclerotherapy is unsuitable.

How much does varicose vein treatment cost in the UK?
It depends on the procedure and whether one leg or both are treated. Published prices read on 15 August 2026: Practice Plus Group lists foam sclerotherapy at £1,349 a leg, laser at £1,795 and radiofrequency ablation at £3,149; Benenden Hospital lists foam from £1,618 and laser from £3,467 a leg; Spire Manchester lists treatment from £4,252 for one leg.
Does the NHS treat varicose veins?
Yes, where they cause symptoms or complications, and it costs the patient nothing. The NHS says a GP may refer you to a specialist if you have pain, heaviness, swollen legs, itching or skin changes, or complications such as leg ulcers, and that treatment purely to improve how the veins look is not usually available on the NHS.
Is varicose vein treatment done under general anaesthetic?
Usually not. The NHS says endothermal ablation and foam sclerotherapy are both done with a local anaesthetic while you are awake, in a hospital or clinic, with a same-day discharge. Ligation and stripping surgery is usually done under general anaesthetic, and the NHS says that is offered where the simpler procedures are not suitable.
How long does recovery take after varicose vein treatment?
The NHS says that after endothermal ablation or foam sclerotherapy you may need to wear compression stockings for about a week and may have some pain and bruising, but should be able to go back to most usual activities straight away. After ligation and stripping surgery it says you may need 1 to 2 weeks off work.
Will I need more than one treatment session?
Possibly. NICE guideline CG168 says people should be told that new varicose veins may develop after treatment, that they may need more than one session of treatment, and that recurrence after treatment for recurrent varicose veins is more likely than for primary varicose veins. Ask what a second session would cost before you book the first.
